Skip’s Toms River Florist: A Brief History

Skip Skolnik, a highly decorated World War II hero from St. Joe, Missouri, married Shirley from Brooklyn, New York and moved to a little town called Toms River. At that time there were no malls and very few gift shops. Shirley became a woman ahead of her time when she turned a flower shop into “the Showroom of Ocean County” with pottery, greeting cards, plush teddy bears and puppies, balloons, European dish gardens, custom silk arrangements and fruit and gourmet baskets.

Skip put Toms River on the map when he accepted an invitation from the White House in Washington to decorate for five Christmases, several Presidential Inaugurations, and the President’s daughter’s wedding. Toms River Florist became known as Skip’s Toms River Flowers and Gifts.

Sanford (Sandy) Skolnik and his wife Stella have maintained the Family Tradition of Excellence in every hand-picked item in the store and the unmatched service to their customers as well as the quality of fresh flowers and plants. The plants come from local growers whenever possible and the flowers are flown in daily from around the world.

Sandy, with a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Ornamental Horticulture and Floral Artistry has brought this small town flower shop into the 21st century with innovative techniques and masterful designs. No matter what the occasion, no matter how small or grand, this shop can deliver and always with a smile. His selection of fresh cut flowers changes on a daily basis with deliveries from around the world: orchids from the Philippines, exotics like Birds of Paradise and Ginger from Hawaii, Alstro, tulips, lilies from Holland, roses from Mexico, South America and California.

Stella has maintained the “Gift Shop” showroom by adding luxury body products from Crabtree and Evelyn, crystal vases from Waterford and Lenox, and just became approved to carry Godiva chocolates, Rothchild and preserves and sauces and Lampe Berger.
